Apple Valley Inn: Hollywood's Vacationland

by Armand Vaquer

Back in Hollywood's heyday, the Apple Valley Inn in the high desert town of Apple Valley (near Victorville) was a favorate hideaway for members of the Hollywood entertainment industry.

The Inn was built in the 1940s by Newton Bass and Bud Westlund. Visitors to the historic Apple Valley Inn include June Allyson, Jim Arness, Gene Autry, Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz, MacDonald Carey, Bob Cummings, Tony Curtis & Janet Leigh, Phyllis Diller, Bob Hope, Errol Flynn, Joan Fontaine, Billy Graham, Hedda Hopper, Louella Parsons, Jerry Lewis, Fred MacMurray, Dean Martin, Donald O'Connor, Gregory Peck, George Reeves, Dale Robertson, Roy Rogers & Dale Evans, Caesar Romero, Jane Russell, Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Wagner & Natalie Wood, John Wayne, Johnny Weissmuller, Lawrence Welk and Jonathan Winters, just to name just a few.

Here we have actor George Reeves enjoying some vacation time in front of the Inn in the 1950s. And, we also have a photo of the Inn taken in 2007.

The Apple Valley Inn was once an actual inn, but is now a business center with retail and office space. They haven't forgotten their roots as the Inn still serves brunch and dinner.
