1) KIRK ALYN --
Several readers wrote to say no mention of Kirk Alyn's death
appeared in
their local papers. Bob Hoffman of Coldsprings, Texas, sent this
obituary
from the Houston Chronicle:
<<Kirk Alyn, an actor who starred as Superman in two
early serials died
Sunday [March 14, 1999] at Heritage Sam Houston Gardens, nursing
home
following a long illness. He was 88. For the past 12 years, Alyn
had lived in The
Woodlands.
Alyn starred as the Man of Steel in Superman:the Serial
in 1948 and Atom
Man vs Superman in 1950. At the time, such serials were shown
in chapters
with a cliffhanger ending each week designed to entice young
viewers to
return to the movie theater for the next installment. Alyn also
appeared in
an uncredited role as the young Lois Lane's father in the 1978
movie
Superman:The Movie that starred Christopher Reeve.
His film career spanned 49 years, but the bulk of his performances
were in
the 1940s and early 1950s, when he appeared in Blackhawk,
When Worlds
Collide, Radar Patrol vs. Sky King, and The Daughter
of Don Q. The
first run serials disappeared from theaters in the 1950s. He
also appeared
in two episodes of the 1970s television series Battlestar
Galactica.
Funeral arrangements are being handles by Forest Park The
Woodlands Funeral
Home and Cemetery. A memorial service will take place Friday
in Hollywood,
California.>>
Attached is a photo of Kirk Alyn with my wife, Gail, at the
Superman
Exposition in Cleveland in 1988.
2) A JOB FOR SUPERMAN --
Since his death, several readers have asked me about Kirk's book.
A Job
For Superman was published in 1971. In the foreward, the
publisher states
in part, "Alyn takes great delight in telling stories of
how the cliffhangers were
made since he remembers so vididly his own boyhood pleasure at
the Saturday
afternoon movies. Kirk Alyn tells it with all good humor and
fond commentary.
This book contains stories of show business and show people ranging
over a
period of some thirty years and including every branch of the
entertainment
field -- excepting only carnivals and burlesque.
The chapter titles are: The Superman Job, Show Business Back
East, Hollywood
Feature Pictures, The Westerns, and The Other Cliffhangers.
The book contains 118 pages of text and many interesting photos
of Kirk in
his many different roles. The book is currently not in print.

4) A REVIEW OF THE SUPERMAN MUSIC CD
Soon after the CD mentioned above was released, I received a
review from
Donald Wurzelbacher. If anyone else purchased the CD, feel free
to send your
comments also.
<<Jim, I know you were talking about the Superman ultimate
CD a few times
and I wanted you to know that I did buy it since it is part of
my Superman
collection. Unfortunately, you may want to warn your readers
that it is far
from any type of ultimate collection. In a total of 16 tracks,
ten of them
are from the Superman movies. Only ONE is from the George Reeves
television
series and ONE is from the Kirk Alyn serials. There is one from
the
Fleischer cartoons, two from the broadway musical, and one from
Supergirl
(equal time?) I'm sorry to say that it is nothing but a rehash
of the movie
music which most Superman fans probably already have. I critiqued
it on the
Amazon Books webpage today which means that it probably won't
be posted
until next week. I gave it one star just because the orchestration
was done
well. In my opinion this CD is not worth the trouble to buy.
You want an
ultimate collection? Tape your own music, but don't waste your
time or money
with this. Don>>
5) THINGS TO LOOK FOR
There are a couple things you might want to check out. Superman
and the
Mole-Men is currently available on laser disk. Also Jan
Alan Henderson's
Speeding Bullet will be reviewed in Filmfax,
and Cult Movies magazine.
In addition to the review, Cult Movies will feature an
interview with
Jan. I'll let you know when those to publications hit the news
stands.
6) VARIETY AD
Just a reminder ... the George Reeves commemorative ad will appear
in the
Los Angeles edition of Daily Variety on June 1, 1999.
If you'd still like
to be included in the ad, I must have your contribution by April
10, and if
you want to purchase a copy of Variety through me, I must
have your money
and order by April 15. Thanks again to everyone who helped make
the ad
possible.
