1) VARIETY AD TO BE PUBLISHED IN OCTOBER
On October 13, 1951, filming on "The Evil Three," "Czar
of the Underworld,"
"Crime Wave," "Riddle of the Chinese Jade,"
and "Superman On Earth" was
completed, and production of the first season of the Adventures
of
Superman came to an end. In October, 2001 you, the readers
of The
Adventures Continue will mark its 50th Anniversary by publishing
a
full-page ad in Variety. If you aren't a part of this
but would still like
to be, I'll be taking contributions until next Saturday, September
22. Then
I'll send the list of contributors to Lindsey at Variety
and make final
arrangments. I'm also happy to note that we will be able to make
a very
generous contribution to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation.
2) HOW WILL I KNOW WHEN THE AD WILL BE PUBLISHED?
After all arrangments are made and I have an exact date for publication,
I'll send out another message via e-mail and will post the information
on
the web site. In the past I was able
to get extra copies to make available
to you for the cover price plus shipping and handling charges.
If I'm again
able to do that, I'll let you know.
3) "ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN" ON DVD PETITION
From Jeff Minich of Cleveland, Ohio:

Please give this petition your support. How wonderful it would
be to see all
104 episodes fully restored!
4) PROFESSOR ROBERTS! THE OBSERVATORY!
Last month I recevied this scoop of news from Len Wolinsky of
Toronto. I
haven't checked... does anyone know if the same observatory was
used in
"Panic In The Sky?"
Hi Jim,
I thought you and your readers might be interested in a short
reference to
the Adventures of Superman in the August issue of Sky
and Telescope
magazine. It has an article by Griffith Observatory director
E. C. Krupp (a
regular writer in the magazine) on the cinematic uses of the
observatory.
On page 93 he writes:
"In the 1950's, when the pilot episode of the Adventures
of Superman
television show needed a Hall of Science for Jor-El on the planet
Krypton,
Griffith and its Hall of Science got the part." He goes
on to mention Flash
Gordon, James Dean and others, and although there are several
accompanying
photos, there's none from Superman.
5) TRAGIC DAYS
I cannot end this issue of TAC, Jr. without expressing my sorrow
over the
recent tragic events in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania.
And just a
few days before that, I experienced another tragedy when friends
of mine
were murdered -- stabbed, shot, and beaten beyond recognition
by their
adopted son.
We all feel a need to express our sorrow... and some of you
chose to write
to me. Some of you, I discovered, live and work in New York and
were
directly affected by the day's events. I cannot imagine the fear
you must
have felt. It was gratifying for me, however, to learn you believe
I am
someone who can understand your feelings of sorrow. I do indeed.
And decent
people all over the world share your grief. And we know the people
responsible are cowards of the first magnitude.
Many of you expressed sadness that Superman is not here to
protect the world
from these unconscionable acts. That would be nice, but alas,
Superman is a
fictional character, and we live in a world of reality... sometimes
a harsh
reality... where there is no Superman to protect us. We must,
in this world,
protect ourselves. The hatred and killing must stop, for in such
a world, in
the end, no one will survive.
