If were were to walk from the courthouse past Floyd's until
we came to the corner and continued on across the street, we
would be standing at the entrance to a building that witnessed
many classic scenes in both the Adventures of Superman
and The Andy Griffith Show. Andy Taylor knew it as the
Mayberry Hotel, but it was once the humble house of the infamous
Dr. Ort in "The Secret of Superman." The porch and
doorway to the building are also prominently featured in the
Griffith episode, "Guest of Honor" when Andy stands
there with other officials to make a speech, before the whole
town of Mayberry, welcoming a special guest who turns out to
be a pick pocket. In the hilarious "Citizen's Arrest,"
Barney arrests Gomer for making an illegal U-turn right in front
of Dr. Ort's house. Superman viewers should also
recognize this location as the exact spot where George makes
his spectacular springboard take-off in "Riddle of the Chinese
Jade." The building changed little in the decade between
the two series.

Superman -- Note the post supporting Dr. Ort.
In The Andy Griffith Show, although the porch is altered slightly,
Opie sits by the very same post. Note also the steps under the
porch rail. |
